Benhams go Walkabout WEEK 17 - ALICE SPRINGS & AROUND

LOOKS SOFT. ITS NOT.

Quote of the Week - Eddie “Did God have a big shed full of bones and go to his shed to make people?” Cute

Big drive straight down the centre of NT. Aiming for Karlu Karlu (The Devil’s Marbles) with a roadside rest stop one night and a stock up stop in Tennant Creek. Karlu Karlu turned out to be a great stop. Picturesque camping among the boulders that are strewn across the plains at the foot of rolling hills.

KARLU KARLU (DEVIL'S MARBLES)

Stopped for a night in Aileron on our way to Alice Springs. I had heard of these enormous sculptures of figures on the hill there. Turns out the owner of the roadhouse commissioned these 12m high Aboriginal figures. In his words “garden gnomes”. A good way to create a tourism landmark out of nothing it seems.

We made some trips out from Alice Springs. Chasms, gorges, ranges. The usual. They were beautiful and underrated. Rainbow Valley could have been the set for a Martian movie and we virtually had it to ourselves. Angus had been waiting 10 years to see it. Pretty cool.
